Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi
Platform: Disney+
Director: George Lucas
Year Released: 1983
Watch Date: April 10, 2021
My Rating: 8.5
I will admit that I originally gave this one an 8.2. I bumped it up three extra points because it had Ewoks and Chewbacca. So far this one has been my favorite. The script seems more well developed and the characters were more likable. Han and Leia’s relationship is an interesting plot point. I don’t really see them lasting though…..Leia is too headstrong for jealous Han. I feel like this one moved at a faster pace and had better sequencing. The fighting and flying scenes on Endor were spectacular.
The Emperor is an interesting character….and one who I wasn’t sad to see go. Of course I knew what was going to happen because I watched as a kid, but somehow the scene with the Emperor killing Luke was more satisfying as an adult. Even though Darth Vader is basically a helmet, you could feel his hurt and his desire to save his son. It was moving. I have a lot of unanswered questions (like where did Luke learn to make a lightsaber, and if Luke was supposed to be protected, why didn’t his aunt and uncle change his last name, and why does Vader still get to be part of the force, and if TaunTauns are native to Hoth, why did the TaunTaun die, and why would you build a huge space death machine and have it so vulnerable?), hopefully I’ll get some answers.
Would watch again. Next in line is Episode I, and then I will be in “I’ve never seen this before” territory.
