Solo: A Star Wars Story

Platform: Disney+

Director: Ron Howard

Release Year: 2018

Date Watched: April 14, 2021 (rewatch)

My Rating: 5.2

I’ve seen Solo before, and I didn’t care for it then. One of the people I follow on TikTok thought it was good, so I thought maybe I missed something the first time. I didn’t. The story line is predictable, the characters aren’t compelling (except Chewbacca and Val), and the casting is questionable. Solo tries to break out with an action sequence then dives right into pulling at your heart strings when Han and Qi’ra are separated. Obviously Han’s intent for the rest of the movie is going to be getting back to Qi’ra…..but you already know that there is no happily ever after to the story, so you wonder how the story will have them meet and then separate again.

Lando, who was one of my favorite characters in Episode 6, was neither charming or likable. I also found Han to be annoying and unlikable. I just didn’t want to root for him. He didn’t seem to learn any lessons from seeing the cycle of Beckett’s life (it was always about the next big score…..which was basically the entire premise of the movie). I wasn’t even sad when Qi’ra left him in the end…..it was actually one of the better parts of the movie. The most sensible character was Val. I found her to be likable and delightful…..so naturally she died within the first 20 minutes.

I will NOT be watching this one a third time!
