If you are up for a campy quirky mystery, this is a good movie. It’s usually found in the horror-comedy section, but it definitely is WAY more of a comedy than a horror. The only “horror” it has going on is old movie monsteresque characters. Two tabloid reporters are sent to Transylvania to do a story on Frankenstein (or rather Frankenstein’s monster). Misadventure and misunderstandings ensue.
With a cast of Carol Kane, Jeff Goldblum, Ed Begley Jr, Jeffrey Jones, and Geena Davis, you know it is going to be comedy gold. While I find his characters and comedy annoying, even Michael Richards adds to the comedic value of this movie. With recurring comedy points such as Ed Begley Jr shutting doors on people, Geena Davis pretending to be a nympho vampire, and Teresa Ganzel’s ability to break wine bottles over people’s heads you have something to look forward to at every turn.
I definitely recommend this movie if you are looking for something light hearted and fun. Keep in mind that it did come out in 1985 so there is more blatant racism and discrimination, talk of communists, and mysogony than in more modern movies.
Will definitely watch it again (and again).
