It’s hard to find a good haunted house story that isn’t completely ridiculous or over the top. Malevolent did a really good job of walking the line. It’s about a team of fake paranormal investigators that don’t actually turn out to be fake. One of the girls (and her brother) inherited the ability to see spirits. The team goes to a very large country manor to help exorcise some ghosts that won’t stop screaming.
The ghosts are little girls that were killed in the house. They had their tongues cut out, their lips sewn shut, and their jaws broken. They end up leading the team to where they were held and eventually where they were tortured. Along the way, three of the four-person team die, including the brother. It turns out that the woman who owns the house thought the girls should be grateful, but they were too noisy, so she made them be quiet (cringe).
The script was good. The actors were mostly B-list, but great. I love that Celia Imrie played the woman who owned the manor. She is a phenomenal actor and did such a great job of being cool and soothing, even when she was sewing mouthes shut.
I would watch this again.
