Starling House
By Alix E. Harrow
I didn’t love The Ten Thousand Doors of January, but I decided to give Alix E. Harrow another chance with The Once and Future Witches, which I found captivating. When I read the synopsis for Starling House, I had a good feeling that it was going to be good. It wasn’t good though, it was flipping fantastic!
I recognized a bit of myself in Opal. I have been taking care of myself for a long time…and consistently out the needs of others before myself…sometimes to my detriment, like Opal. I have given up on dreams for the greater good of others. But my vibrant dreams still live in my head, and recently I started to let myself live for what I want.
I love that this story tells gives you several angles on Eleanor and the history of Starling house from several perspectives. I feel like that gives you a whole picture of her. I appreciate the psychological view that shows Eleanor is stuck inside herself as an angry child who was wronged by those who should have protected her. I also like the parallels between her life and Opals.
10/10, well written, imaginative, engaging, and well detailed. I will definitely give this one a listen again in the future.
